WHAT IS PAD ?
Peripheral artery disease a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs. When you develop a PAD, your extremities - usually your legs - do not receive enough blood to flow to keep up with demand. This causes symptoms most notably leg pain when walking. Peripheral artery disease is likely to be a sign of a more widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in your arteries. This condition may be reducing blood flow to your heart , brain as well as your legs.
SYMPTOMPS
- Painful cramping in your hips , thigh or calf muscles after certain activities such as walking or climbing stairs.
- Leg numbness or weakness.
- Coldness in your lower leg or foot, especially when compared with the other side.
- Sores on your toes, feet or legs that won't heal.
- A change in the color of your legs.
- Hair loss or slower hair growth on your feet and legs.
- Slower growth of your toenails.
- Shiny skin on your legs.
- No pulse or a weak pulse on your legs and feet.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO TREAT WITH PAD
1. PERIPHERAL STENTS :
The revascularization strategy for PAD differs from coronary artery disease (CAD). Instead of attempting a permanent repair to reopen vessels as in CAD , the vessels in legs are treated with the expectation that the patient will need the same segments recascularized again in the future. PAD restenosis rates are very high with the use of both PTA and stunts. Stunts in the legs are exposed to torque and pressures not found in the heart, protected by ribcage. This environment leads to high rates of in-stent restenosis and stunt fractures.Theoated vse issues have lead to development of specialty stents for PAD. Most peripheral stents are self expanding, flexible and handle flexing and external crusing pressures better than rigid balloon expanding stents.

2. DRUG-COATED BALLOONS:
These are the balloons with a coating of drug. They ejaculate the drug while the drug coated balloon is placed between the blocked artery. The working of drug coated balloon is shown hereunder:
